Dead Butt Syndrome Is A Growing Problem; Here Is How To Tell If You Have It
There are millions of people around the world tied to a desk job. There are many others too working freelance like writers and bloggers passionate about their work who end up sitting for hours at a stretch. Little do we know the dangers of prolonged sitting which can increase your risk of disease from diabetes to cancer? Besides such conditions, what is even more real is the increased risk of tailbone conditions such as coccydynia. Americans should become more aware of the dangers of sitting too long resulting in a condition that is becoming very common today. That is Dead Butt Syndrome.
1What is dead butt syndrome?
Dead butt syndrome or gluteal amnesia is a condition that is literally making people’s butts fall asleep. It is an inflammation of the gluteus medius which forgets how to function normally. Sitting for prolonged periods can result in restriction of blood circulation that causes gluteal amnesia. This can again lead to hip pain, low back pain and ankle problems. Even when one does exercises for the glutes, they fail to fire up.
2Your glutes cannot bear your weight for prolonged period
Your glutes are not designed to bear weights for long periods, neither do they react well when sitting for prolonged period. When you sit for too long on your butt, this reduces your body’s ability to use the powerful gluteus muscles when they are required.
3Why glute function shuts down
The continuous sitting position that keeps the hip flexed and compresses tissues creates a perfect condition to shut down the glute function leading to “dead butt syndrome”. Those experiencing the condition will feel as part of their body has fallen asleep also known as Paresthesia.
Paresthesia is also a condition caused by the compression of nerves. The symptoms can vary from mild to severe. It can be short term or long term depending on how much you sit each day.
4How to know if you are developing dead butt syndrome
The main cause of the condition is inactivity. If you are sitting all day at your desk or couch for hours on end without any activity, the risk is increased. This has a major impact in your glutes. When the glutes start shutting down, it strains other muscles and joints. This is because other weaker muscles have to do the job of the glutes. When the condition is not treated, it can lead “to synergistic dominance”. This is when smaller hip and leg muscles take over body movement and controls weight or force on the hips, lower back and spine.
5One of the major symptoms of dead butt
A major symptom of dead butt syndrome is muscle tightness in the hips. Without good flexibility, it will seem like all the power is being squeezed out of the glutes maximus due to movement being challenged and not allowing the glutes to gain enough force to function fully. When you perform the wrong exercises, it can worsen the condition.
