Cancer researchers claim T-Cell therapy shows remarkable and unbelievable results in treatment of blood cancer
Science will never cease to amaze us. Just when we thought blood cancer had us pinned down, along comes one of the most advanced genetic cell engineering discovery of our times. Scientists have successfully engineered T-cells from the immune system to fight various types of blood cancers. Moreover the first clinical trials have shown outstanding results.
In what could possibly be a path breaking discovery, several human volunteers each stricken with various forms of blood cancer, left with only a few months to live underwent testing with the newly engineered T-cells. Results proved positive from 80 percent to near total remission. In a single study alone, 94% of volunteers with the deadly acute lymphoblastic leukemia found that their symptoms had completely vanished. Imagine what this could mean in the war against cancer. Blood Cancer is now curable!!
1 Unprecedented discovery of T-cell therapy for cure of blood cancer
T-cell engineering or T-cell therapy as it will soon be called, involves the removal of immune cells from patients’ cells, which are lymphocytes or types of white blood cells that usually mature in a lymph node found near the heart. Some mature in the tonsils too.
The T-cells are engineered in a lab and tagged with receptors which are molecules that target only cancer cells just as various T-cells target different types of disease. The engineered cells are injected back into the immune system.
2 T-cell therapy will be the last resort in fighting cancer
T-Cells are like living drugs existing in our body in a continuous state. They can exist for a lifetime. However, every positive discovery does have side effects. Thus T-cell engineering can only be carried out in cancer’s large stages. T-cell therapy can cause an increase in lymphocytes or the immune cells. Termed as CRS or cytokine release syndrome, it could cause hypotension, fevers and neurotoxicity where two patients have died receiving it.
However, the positive does outweigh the negative by a huge margin. Of all those patients who underwent T-cell therapy, none had any measure of success with chemo therapy and were in cancer’s last stages.
3 Researchers are highly optimistic at the possibilities of a cellular product
Researcher Stanley Riddell of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Washington believes that though scientists have reasons to be both optimistic and careful, still one hopes, that low doses of T-cell therapy could counter the risks associated with the procedure.
He also went on to declare that most of the volunteer patients participating in the trials had just a few months to live. Considering the extent of progressive blood cancers in all participants, the results of T-cell therapy were remarkable and unbelievable. Fellow researcher Chiara Bonnini was hopeful of a cellular product which could be available soon.
4 T-cell therapy research hopes to target different cancers too
Riddell stated that T-cell therapy is a living form of therapy. This means if your body once injected with engineered T-cells, it will always be present in your system.
Tests are still being carried out to gauge the extent and duration of cancer remission observed in terminal patients. Bonnini has expressed hope for the procedure to engineer T memory cells in a bid to create a permanent strategy for combining cancer from within the body’s immune system. Thus the body would acquire a long term defense against the dreaded cancer.
5 Progressing from chemotherapy and radiotherapy, we will soon have IMMUNOTHERAPY against cancer
The study and research involved 35 patients’ terminally sick with ALL and various types of blood cancer. Modified T-cells were infused into every patient. Although symptoms could resurface, still the remission was a hopeful 94%. Lymphoma patients showed a higher remission rate of over 50%. Those diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, the reduction was 80%.
Finally, blood cancer will now be curable with T-cell immunotherapy. With positive response from research, clinical trials will continue till the therapy is made available to the public. Immunotherapy will supersede all forms of cancer therapy as the leading cure for blood cancer. Acute Lymphoblastic leukemia may soon be just another disease.
