Can Cancer occur due to high sugar intake?
Until recently, it was thought that high sugar intake only led to diabetes and obesity. However, a recent research study has found out that if one takes sugar in larger proportion, it can also lead to lung and breast cancer. 1 Comprehensive study
This research was commissioned by researchers at Anderson Cancer Center. The study further found that inflammation of the mammary glands was the reason behind the development of cancer and increased sugar intake acted as a catalyst in this.
Researchers found out that people in Western countries included high amount of dietary sugar in their daily food. This resulted in metastasis of the lungs and also increased the risk of breast cancer. The impact of sugar on mammary glands of mice was studied as a part of this research trial.
2 Trial Research Method
As a part of this trial to investigate the impact of high sugar intake on human body, a set of four different studies was conducted on mice. The mice were divided randomly into different groups and fed on four different diets.
3 The Findings
The results were interesting enough and it was found that at six months of their age, around 30% of the mice who were fed a starch control diet developed measurable range of tumor. Interestingly, 50 to 58% of the mice who had been fed on sucrose enriched food developed mammary tumors.
The researchers also found that lung metastases were on the higher side in mice that were given fructose or sucrose based diet. Metastases were on the lower side in mice that were fed a starch controlled diet. The research team observed that the prime cause of obesity, heart diseases and cancer throughout the world was increasing due tothe consumption of beverages, which were rich in sugar.
4 Impact of the Study
As a consequence of this study, new federal dietary guidelines have been announced in United States. People in America have been advised to cut down on their sugar intake.
Such dietary guidelines are not uncommon in United States and are issued by agriculture, health and human services departments. These guidelines are reissued after updates every five years and are being issued since 1980.
5 The way out
Giving up on sugar or sugar based products is not possible entirely. Therefore, it becomes essential to know the exact amount of sugar that can be consumed within the safe limits. American Heart Association points out that women, in general, should not be consuming more than six teaspoons of sugar every day. Men can however take up to nine teaspoon of sugar on any given day.
If this amount is calculated in calories, it is likely to translate to 100 calories for women and 150 calories for men.
The cause for concern is that men in the United States consume an average of 22 teaspoons of sugar every day. This is much more than the safe limit prescribed by American Hazard Association. Salad dressings and canned vegetables too have hidden amount of sugar and can add to the problem.
The only viable way out here is to limit the sugar intake so that you remain hale and hearty. Alternatively, you can also opt for natural sugars as agave, nectar and honey syrup. These too have sufficient amount of anti-oxidants and help your body from any cancerous attack. Develop the instinct of having your dose of sweet from fruits rather than processed food.
