12 Cooking Habits We Didn’t Know Could Be Dangerous To Health
However, there are certain common mistakes we all make while cooking which we do not seem to notice. For instance, there could be dangerous bacteria on the food which will be nearly impossible to recognize due to the food’s appearance and taste. As such, a small amount of those bacteria can cause serious food poisoning. Throwing away such products would be the safest way to avoid it, especially if you have doubts about it being spoiled.
So here are some of the most common cooking habits we didn’t know could be actually dangerous.
1Letting meat defrost outside
Storing food at a temperature range of 41°F to 140°F (5°C to 60°C) is considered to be very risky. It is at this temperature range that harmful bacteria can cultivate and grow rapidly. You should always defrost meat only inside your refrigerator or in a microwave.
2Washing raw meat
Our idea of cleaning things makes us think that washing stuff with water gets them clean. But, this doesn’t exactly apply to everything like for example, meat. Specialists especially advise against washing raw poultry, pork, beef, lamb, or veal before cooking it. This is mainly due to the fact that the bacteria from the meat can spread on to other products, surfaces, and utensils.
3Letting food cool down before putting them into the fridge
The reason why defrosting meat outside is a bad idea, is the same for why you shouldn’t allow food to cool down before putting them into the fridge. Bacteria can rapidly grow at temperatures of 41°F to 140°F (5°C to 60°C) which is why leaving perishable products outside the fridge for more than an hour or more can be very dangerous.
4Tasting food to check if it’s spoiled
There is no way to recognize dangerous bacteria by simply looking at the food’s appearance or by tasting it. But, you can easily get food poisoning by ingesting even a small amount of such bacteria. If you doubt that your food is spoiled then throw it away and don’t bother eating it just to find out.
