1 The Cartoon Debuted In the Forties
Tom and Jerry debuted on February 10th 1940. Its first episode was titled ‘Puss gets the boot” and was created by makers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. Eversince then, there have been a total of 164 shorts till 2014. The first episode was the longest.
2 Tom And Jerry Aren’t Their Real Household Names
While Tom is a common reference to a male cat, the cartoon character was actually given the named ‘Jasper’ in his debut appearance. Jerry was named ‘Jinx’. The names were changed later in a competition.

The title of the animation series Tom and Jerry originated from an 1823 book titled the Life in London or The Adventures of Jerry Hawthorne and his elegant friend “Corinthian Tom”

The resounding success of the initial episodes influenced MGM to produce more shorts but with a name change. The creators decided to hold a competition among animators with a winning prize of fifty dollars. The winning title was drawn from among several suggestions placed in a hat. The title was of course “Tom and Jerry”
7 The Original Tom and Jerry Cartoons Stared a Human Couple
Van Bueren studios first produced the original Tom and Jerry starring an odd couple of two male friends. 26 shorts were produced between 1931 and 1933. The episodes were unlike the innocent cat and mouse rivalry and was described as bizarre and bawdy.
8 Joseph Barbera Began His Career with the Original Tom and Jerry
Joseph Barbera first began his animation career working on the original Tom and Jerry for Van Bueren studios in 1932. He joined MGM in 1937 where he met colleague William Hanna.
