Acting is one of the most difficult professions and despite all the glitz and glamour that comes with the profession. Actor have to put in much more than just time for their roles and some actors have known to go to extreme transformations in order to play their roles. Here are 8 actors who suffered both mentally and physically before, during and after the filming of their acting assignments, yet gave their best performances.
1 Natalie Portman – Black Swan
Natalie Portman got an Academy Award for her brilliant portrayal as a troubled ballerina in the Black Swan. But her preparation routine for perfecting the ballerina dance and moves left her with many injuries such as broken ribs, toes and considerable weight loss.

2 Cuba Gooding Jr – People vs O.J. Simpson
Cuba Gooding Jr. has got rave reviews for his role as O. J. Simpson in People vs. O.J. Simpson on FX. However, he recently shared that it was difficult for him get out of the mentality of O.J. Simpson after the filming ended. He also damaged his vocal chords, after modulating his voice to match O.J’s and had to consult a doctor afterwards to get his voice back.

3 Christian Bale- The Machinist and Batman Begins
Christian Bale is known for his crazy modification that he does to his body for his movie roles. He dropped 60 pounds in small amount of time for his role in the Machinist and then gained more than 90 pounds just in time to play Batman in Batman Begins after filming for the Machinist ended. This ended up making him sick, as this losing and gaining of this amount of weight in such short period of time had adverse effects on his body.

4 Leonardo DiCaprio – The Revenant
Leonardo DiCaprio finally won his first Academy award for fighting a bear in the Revenant. He actually slept in animal carcass, ate raw bison liver despite being a vegetarian, jumped in rivers in freezing temperatures for his role in this movie of a trapper who is left for dead by his friends after that fight with bear.

5 Malcolm McDowell – A Clockwork Orange
A Clockwork Orange is considered a cinematic masterpiece by Stanley Kubrick and brilliantly acted by Malcolm McDowell. However being the perfectionist that Kubrick was, he made his actors perform several retakes until he was satisfied with the shot. McDowell suffered temporary blindness and a scratched cornea during that brainwashing sequence, something he didn’t like.

Anne Hathaway got into the skin of her role as Fantine in Les Miserbles and she had to drop a big amount of weight to look her part which led to go into depression mentally and emotionally and had to take therapy to get back to normal. However, she ended up winning the Best supporting actress Oscar for her role.

Jim Caviezel played the role of Jesus Christ in the Mel Gibson epic which shows the last few days in the life of Christ. It seems like someone was not happy with Jim playing Jesus and Jim was struck by lightning, suffered pneumonia and hypothermia along with several injuries during the flogging scene.
