Being a celebrity is not just all glitz and glam and money and being worshipped by millions of fans. They have their own negatives to deal with as nothing of their lives is personal, private or anything. Even their tragedy and grief are matter of gossip and tabloid fodder for paparazzi. But their grief and sadness make them human for us and here are 8 celebs who have endured and survived traumatic events in their lives, yet entertained us to the max.
1 Kelsey Grammer
Though Kelsey Grammer tickled out funny bones as Dr. Frasier Crane in sitcom Frasier, his life story reads out like an extremely tragic novel. His sister Karen was murdered by serial killer Freddie Glenn when she was 18 in 1975. He also lost his father and two brothers in horrible tragedies. Since then he has opposed Glenn’s release whenever the killer has come up for parole hearing. He said, “I accept your apology. I forgive you. However, I cannot give your release my endorsement. To give that a blessing would be a betrayal of my sister’s life.”
2 Liam Neeson
Irish Actor Liam Neeson is known for his tough as nails characters in movies, but in 2009, his wife, actress Natasha Richardson lost her life after she hit her head while skiing and suffering brain damage. He didn’t speak to anyone about this incident until he revealed all in an interview with Anderson Cooper. He said that he saw his wife on hospital bed and he had to tell that she was not going to make it from the accident, as the damage to her brain was too much. The family had decided to bring her back to New York so that she could pass her last few days with her family. He said, “… anytime I hear that door opening, I still think I’m going to hear her… It hits you. It’s like a wave. You just get this profound feeling of instability… the Earth isn’t stable anymore and then it passes and it becomes more infrequent, but I still get it sometimes.”
3 Oprah Winfrey
Oprah Winfrey is the inarguable queen of TV talk shows and her show Oprah is probably the highest rated talk shows in US TV history. She now owns her own TV network and is worth over $2.5 billion dollars. Recently she opened up about her past saying that she was raped and had a child who passed away, all before she was 15 years old. “I was raped at 9 years old by a cousin, then again by another family member, and another family member,” she told the audience.
Mo’Nique surprised everyone by winning the academy award for performance in Precious in 2009.She also revealed that she was sexually abused between the ages of 7 to 11 by her brother. She said this experience helped her to channel all the anger and depression into her academy award winning performance as Mary Jones in the movie Precious.
5 Gabriel Byrne
Actor Gabriel Byrne revealed that he experienced sexual abuse when he was attending a seminary when he was young. He said that he received abuse at the hands of priest and he said, “It was a known and admitted fact of life amongst us that there was this particular man, and you didn’t want to be left in the dressing room with him.” He also struggled with addiction to alcohol and depression, due to the abuse he suffered as a child.
6 Charlize Theron
Oscar award winner Charlize Theron recently revealed a tragic and dark event that changed her completely. She revealed that her father was shot by her mother one night, when her father and brother came home drunk one night and shot through the locked gate with a gun. “My dad was a big guy, tall, skinny legs, big belly,” she said. “[He] could be very serious but loved to laugh as well, and enjoyed life. He also had a disease. He was an alcoholic.” That night, he began by shooting through the locked gate in the front of their home and then through the kitchen door.” She says. Her mother grabbed her handgun and went out to confront her dad who was threatening to kill both her and Charlize. When she came back, she said that she had killed her dad and wounded her brother.
7 Ashley Judd
Actress and academy award winner Ashley Judd is the daughter of Naomi and Wynonna Judd, both of them being country music legends. She said that she was exposed to sex from a young age and she is a three time rape survivor and victim of many other abuses. She recollects instances of older men who took advantages of her when she was young and even asked her perform sexual acts on them forcibly.
8 Keanu Reeves
Keanu Reeves is one of the few A list Hollywood stars that is actually down to Earth thanks to all the tragedies he has been through his life. The Matrix Trilogy star lost his girlfriend Jennifer Syme to an accident, after she had given birth to their stillborn daughter. “Grief changes shape, but it never ends,” he said.
