Big, Brawny, and Brainy: A Closer Look At The Tech Behind Modern SUVs
There are lots of technologies that make modern life convenient, stress-free and organised. Our phones keep us connected, but they’re also calendars, calculators, and banking tools that allow us to shop online and chat with our friends and loved ones. Computers help us work, play, research, hack and more. Smart technology makes living simple – some people can order groceries from their fridge, for example.
And the technology behind modern vehicles is equally impressive, making driving a vastly different experience from what it was just a few short decades ago.
In this informative blog, we’ll be exploring all the modern innovation and technology that goes into production and development of our biggest, brawniest and brainiest cars – the modern SUV.
1Direct Injection Engines
Older vehicles rely on a carburetor to facilitate the movement of fuel into the combustion engine, creating power directed towards the wheels, propelling the car forward. Contrary to this, direct injection works by spraying air and fuel into each cylinder of an engine, which then combusts the mixture, creating torque (or power).
This new technology differs from older fuel injection technology, and allows for incredibly improved fuel economy, as less fuel will be put to waste throughout this modern process. The amounts of fuel required for each cylinder are also lessened due to the precision of direct injection itself. We can also see this technology often in modern diesel or turbo diesel engines, which some SUVs are equipped with as well.
2Improved Safety Technology
Modern SUVs come equipped with a whole range of safety features designed to keep your passengers and yourself safe on the road. High safety ratings are commonplace in the SUV market – and these ratings mean that in the unlikely event of a collision, the car is designed to withstand impact while keeping everyone inside the cabin safe and secure. Modern SUVs also have multiple airbags in the front and rear cabin, which deploy during a collision, prioritising the protection of the car’s occupants.
As well as high safety ratings, newer SUVs also have a whole range of modern safety technology. A prime example here are anti-lock braking systems or ABS. ABS is a technology designed to allow vehicles to stop from high speeds safely, without skidding out of control. Modern SUVs come with this feature as a stock standard inclusion.
Another safety feature is lane drift detection. This technology works by detecting if you are drifting out of your lane, usually when travelling over a certain speed. After becoming alerted to the situation, you can rectify your course – staying within your lane and avoiding a crash.
Some modern SUVs also come with global positioning system navigation or GPS for short. These systems work by communicating with a positioning satellite to allow for easy navigation nearly anywhere in the world. In addition to helping drivers navigate, GPS navigation systems can detect traffic jams due to crashes or congestion, and recommend alternative routes, so you can get to where you need to be on time.
Software updates also ensure that your GPS maps stay perfectly up to date, meaning that you’ll always have easy access to the most consistently accurate city or regional maps, navigation assistance, and live traffic updates. Of course, if you’re not happy with the GPS system that comes included in your car’s software, you can of course connect your own phone up to your car’s control panel and get Google Maps running in next to no time too!
4Advanced Audio Systems
Finally, modern SUVs will have advanced audio systems, where you can connect your smartphone to stream audio and take and make calls. Hands-free phone audio allows you to communicate with work, friends and family without touching your phone – keeping you and others safe on the road. Some systems even allow you to read text messages and reply via voice to text.
Alongside being able to take or make hands-free calls, your advanced audio system can also provide a multitude of flexible sound settings that can allow front cabin passengers to listen to music with entirely different sound settings for passengers in the rear cabins. This flexibility in sound system setups can be integral to enjoying lengthy family road trips!
5Modern Tech Miracles
In this article, we’ve shared some of the technology behind modern SUVs, including how the engines work to power your car and conserve fuel. In addition, we also took a closer look at how modern tech works to keep you safe, find your way around and stay in touch with people that matter while you’re on the road. Modern SUVs sure are miles ahead of cars manufactured even ten years ago. No doubt, these big car innovations will continue to occur over this coming decade as well.
