Surabaya Zoo in Java is called the Indonesian Zoo of death: Find out Why!!
If you thought you’ve seen all there is to see on animal cruelty on the net, then think again!! In what appears to be a horror house of sorts, the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia metes out the most inhumane treatment to its animals, which are ill-treated, malnourished and underfed. Rather than being called a zoo, it could rightly qualify as the Zoo horror show or even the Indonesian zoo of death instead.
As if such pathetic conditions to keep animals weren’t enough, zoo keepers don’t even bother providing proper diets to animals. This keeper feeds a lion a ridiculously small morsel of meat.
1 The Hell Hole Called Surabaya Zoo in Java Indonesia
Tourists to the Surabaya Zoo in Indonesia have all confirmed about the inhumane conditions in which the animals struggle to survive, where cages are unusually small and there is hardly any place for wild jungle cats to move. The cramped conditions are virtually a hell hole for animals.
In the last three months, Surabaya zoo has seen 50 animal deaths. The information was provided by none other than a former zoo official. If you thought 50 is a large number, it is just the tip of the iceberg, where animals living in this death camp die or get ill every day.
2 Have You Ever Seen a Tiger As Pathetic As This?
Take a look at this tiger, there is no dignity nor is there an inkling of the majesty that surrounds this magnificent beast, instead in its place a striped emancipated cat perhaps eagerly awaiting its own death.
What is surprising is the fact that this Indonesian zoo of death was reported by prominent media houses such as their BBC as early as 2014 in a bid to highlight the plight of the animals. Bur, unfortunately nothing has changed as the management as well as the government turns a blind eye to what could be termed as normal occurrences.
3 Have You Ever Seen A Bear In Such A Pitiful Depressed State?
Not only is he afflicted with a skin infection, he seems in a state of delirium, perhaps due to weakness and lack of food. In fact in the early years of the Zoo in 2002, it had been once reported that none of the animal handlers had an ounce of experience in managing exotic wild animals.
In 2010 the Forest Ministry of Jakarta had shut down the zoo on allegations of animal cruelty and deaths. The media in Indonesia too termed it the zoo of death due to the deaths of several exotic animals such as the Sumatran tiger, komodo dragons, wallabies and the African lion. An investigation to the effect found most of the inexperienced keepers at fault. Subsequently almost 378 animals were transferred to conservationists. Unfortunately for the animals the zoo re-opened soon after and resumed its common methods of ill treatment towards animals.
4 This is how Skinny Elephants are chained To the Floor
Chained to the floor by three chains, the chains are so tight it cuts into their mangled flesh caused by the constant scraping and friction.
An organization called CEE4life has attempted to fight for the rights of animals in the zoo of death. However despite a petition in the court, action is yet to be taken on the pathetic and disgusting zoo. The only consolation was the rescue of the tiger named Melanie who was was saved and handed over to conservationists with full diet instructions.
Animal rights organizations such as the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums as well as PETA have rallied together to highlight the plight of the animals in Surabaya zoo. Yet no immediate and worthwhile action has been taken to alleviate the horrible conditions of the zoo.
5 You Won’t Believe What the Animals Ate Which Caused Their Deaths
If you look at this camel you’ll wonder why people like the Surabaya management actually exist in this world. What right do humans have to treat animals in such a way? There is a severe lack of food and not one single animal is even fed its daily required rations.
In fact every animal is fed morsels and scraps of food where autopsies proved death occurred by consumed pieces of plastic. This was not only deplorable but gut wrenching as to why the zoo is being allowed to exist at all, was it because of some sadistic twist of negative publicity that was bringing in the tourists to witness the conditions of the animals themselves???
6 Animal Pens Are Used To Dump Litter and Garbage
The only Giraffe in the zoo died due to consuming 20 kg of litter which was thrown into his enclosure. It seems that garbage is regularly thrown into animal pens without a thought in the world as to the distrust consequences of such deplorable and callous actions.
In fact even a lion named Michael was found dead in his pen in what could be termed as a frightful condition. he was found hanging from the very wires used for opening up his cage. As it is too heart rending and depressing to watch such a scene involving a poor helpless animal, the image has purposefully been withheld.
7 A Worldwide Movement Continues Against Surabaya Zoo
As of now online petitions against the zoo of death continue on various forums online where on 31st march 2016, signatures touched the 750,000 mark. But even as the world is dismayed at such cruel treatment in Surabaya zoo, the government seems not overtly concerned in taking much action. In fact plans were laid us by zoo authorities in 2015 to construct yet anther dragon park to house the growing Komodo dragon population.
After several deliberations by World Association of Zoos and Aquariums, Executive Director Gerald Dick, the Indonesia President relented saying his wife was visibly upset after see the bombardment of messages against the zoo on social media. Whether that really had any effect or not is left to be seen. In the meantime the zoo of death continues its operations.
