Sirga meets Valentin repeatedly in the video, and each time she does, she gives him bear hugs! Consider giving a lion a bear hug! Sirga is the lone cub who has made it through the early stages of a lion’s childhood. Needless to say, the credit for this goes to Valentin. He managed to give her a second chance at life because, without her mother’s nursing, her chances of successfully making it to adulthood weren’t too good.

Sirga now has her own domain over which to rule. Her kingdom is a pleasant and tranquil place to live. “Today, she lives in a 2000 ha reserve specially set up for her where she can hunt and live as freely as possible under her circumstances. I am still around for her on a daily basis. I am living in the middle of the bush in Botswana together with Sirga.”

Taking care of Sirga, according to Valentin Grüner, was a life-changing experience. “I’ve always loved animals, but Sirga changed my life forever. Being responsible for her is still teaching me on a daily basis what it means to really be there for another being. I will continue to be by her side and to fight for the survival of her wild relatives for as long as I live.”
