World War II Aircraft Which Crashed in The Himalayas Is Discovered 77 Years Later

Many aircraft went missing during WWII

During World War II, hundreds of US military planes went missing in the Indian, Chinese, and Myanmar theatres of operations. There are several accounts of aircraft losses caused by hostile firing from the Japanese. However, Kuhles believes that the majority of the planes were brought down by ice damage, hurricane-force winds, and other extreme weather conditions.

77 years later, the crashed WWII aircraft was finally found

The plane, which was thought to have been lost forever, was found in December 2021 on a snow-covered mountaintop. The tail number of the flight helped them identify the wreckage and finally discover the crashed WWII aircraft. However, the wreckage of the aircraft contained no signs of life.

A joyous yet sad moment

Bill Scherer, whose officer father was on board the flight when it crashed, was the one who tasked Kuhles with leading the search mission. It came as both a relief and sad moment for Scherer and many others who had family aboard the flight. Scherer stated- “All I can say is that I am overjoyed, just knowing where he is. It is sad but joyous.”

The son of a deceased officer who died on the flight shared his thoughts

Scherer explained that his father was absent from his life from an early age. But he often thought about the day his mother received a telegram informing her that her husband had gone missing, and she is now the sole caretaker of a 13-month-old newborn boy. He said- “I grew up without a father. All I can think of is my poor mother, getting a telegram and finding out her husband is missing, and she is left with me, a 13-month-old baby boy”. This prompted him to reach out to Kuhles to locate the crashed WWII aircraft which was only discovered recently, last year.
