The flies will be drawn towards the sweetness of the liquid and they will dip in the liquid to feed and drown, in case beer, leave the bottle out in the open. The rest will be done by the narrow neck of the bottle which will effectively trap the flies in.

You can also use a bowl, pour in any liquid of choice and cover it with plastic wrap and secure it with a rubber band. Poke tiny holes on the plastic cover, which makes the fruit flies to enter the bowl but they cannot escape out.

Best is to remove the breeding sites all together. Just get rid of old possibly rotting vegetables and fruits and clean up the garbage bin thoroughly and dry it.
